THE TREATMENT · WHAT IT IS

What Is TraditionalThai Massage

Traditional Thai massage is a dry, holistic treatment that works on the body without oils or lotions. Forget the long gliding strokes of an oil massage. Here the therapist uses rhythmic compression and deep stretching instead. The pressure comes from the hands, elbows, knees, and feet, and she guides you through assisted yoga postures that put your body in positions you'd struggle to reach on your own.

Where It Comes From

The practice goes back over 2,500 years to ancient India. It travelled with Buddhism into Thailand and became part of traditional Thai medicine. Most of what's taught today traces back to Wat Pho, the temple beside the Reclining Buddha that still runs Bangkok's most respected massage school.

How It Works

Thai massage blends acupressure and assisted yoga postures to clear the body's energy lines, known as Sen lines. The therapist works steadily along these lines, using rhythmic pressure to release tension and get things flowing again. People describe it as an interactive healing practice that requires active participation, and that's accurate: your breathing and your body are part of the work, not just the surface she's treating.

The Short Version

You stay fully clothed the whole time, and no oil touches your skin.

WHAT IT'S GOOD FOR · THE BODY

What Thai MassageIs Good For

Book Thai massage when you want serious work on the body without the slickness of oil. Traditional Thai massage targets muscle tension and pain relief effectively, and it's a good fit if you're dealing with:

  1. Muscle tension and stiffness

The deep, rhythmic pressure goes straight at knotted muscles, which is why it works so well on a tight back, neck, or shoulders.

  2. Flexibility and range of motion

The assisted stretches lengthen the muscles and open up the joints, so regular guests find they move more freely afterwards.

  3. Circulation

Working rhythmically along the Sen lines enhances blood circulation through the body.

  4. Stress and deep relaxation

The steady rhythm and slow, focused breathing bring on deep relaxation and reduce stress levels, and most guests finish calm and clear-headed.

  5. Anyone who dislikes oil

If you'd rather skip oily skin, a shower afterwards, and scent clinging to your clothes, this is the clean alternative to an oil massage.

Which To Book

It's a stronger, more active treatment than a Swedish or aromatherapy session. If you just want to switch off and drift, book an oil massage instead. If you want your body properly worked on, this is the one.

WHAT TO EXPECT · IN YOUR ROOM

What to Expectin Your Hotel Room

At temples and shophouses, traditional Thai massage usually happens in a shared room with other people around. With Elysian it's private, in your own room. Your therapist brings fresh sheets and lays them over your hotel bed, so you're on a clean, comfortable surface that's already yours, with no shared space and no strangers nearby.

A few things to know before she arrives:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing

There's a lot of stretching, so you need to be able to move. Loose pants and a soft top work best, and she can bring Thai-style pants for you to change into if you'd rather.
  • No oil, no undressing

You stay fully clothed for the whole session.
  • Talk to her

Communication is part of the treatment. Tell her how much pressure you like and point out any tight spot you want her to focus on. Thai massage is interactive, so the more she knows, the better the session goes.
  • Duration

Sessions usually run between 60 and 120 minutes. Ninety is the sweet spot for a full-body treatment that doesn't feel rushed.

Clear a bit of space beside the bed, dim the lights if you like, and let her work. When she's finished, you're already where you want to be, which is the whole point of booking in-room instead of travelling to a spa.

For comparison, traditional Thai massage around Bangkok runs from 200 to 300 baht at a local shophouse, up to 480 baht an hour at Wat Pho. But those are walk-in, communal, and on their schedule, not brought to your room by a licensed therapist late at night. See how every treatment compares on our full pricing page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED · THAI MASSAGE

Thai Massage FAQ

  • It can get intense, but it shouldn't hurt. The pressure and stretching are firm, and you'll often feel tension letting go, but a good therapist stays within your comfort. Tell her how much pressure you like at the start, and speak up during the session too, since communication is part of the treatment.

  • Loose-fitting clothing you can stretch and move in. There's no undressing, because Thai massage is done fully clothed with no oil. If you'd rather, your therapist can bring Thai-style pants for you to change into.

  • Skip a heavy meal right before. The stretching and pressure on the abdomen feel better on a light stomach, so leave an hour or two after eating.

  • Sessions usually last between 60 and 120 minutes. Sixty covers the essentials, 90 gives you a full-body treatment without rushing, and 120 is for when you want the whole thing unhurried. Most guests book 90.

  • No. It's appreciated but never required, and nothing gets added to your bill. Around Bangkok, 10% to 20% is the usual range if you do want to tip, paid in cash straight to your therapist.
